Severe destructive behavior is at times demonstrated in adults with developmental disabilities. It is important to document the efficacy of interventions/treatments selected to treat that behavior. Not demonstrating efficacy can lead to psychotropic polypharmacy and preventable drug toxicity.
The 7 different categories of Causes of Destructive Behavior are discussed (Environmental, Personality, Medical Illness, Drugs, Psychiatric Disorder, Neurodevelopmental Syndrome, and Specific Brain Abnormality) are discussed. Treatment issues are covered as well.
